Rapper Lil Peep, 21, dies of drug overdose. The 21-year-old, real name Gustav Ahr, passed away on Wednesday after overdosing.
Lil Peep was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Long Island by his mother Liza after his father left the family in his youth. After a stint at Long Beach High School he soon dropped out and finished his schooling at home with his first grade teacher mum.
Hours before his death, he posted on instagram an image on-stage with a caption reading: ‘When I die you’ll love me’ while also posting a shot in which he seemed to have placed two pills on his tongue.
The artist’s former lover, Bella Thorne appeared heartbroken as she posted an instagram story in which she mourned his sudden death while his manager, Chase Ortega wrote that he had been expecting this call for a year.
Tributes flooded in, including one from rapper Post Malone, who penned on Twitter: ‘In the short time that i knew you, you were a great friend to me and a great person. your music changed the world and it’ll never be the same. i love you bud. forever’.
Lil Peep was open about his drug use and mental health battles.
Speaking to Pitchfork earlier this year he revealed he is not medicated for depression and insisted he does not like to pay for drugs but have them for free.
He said: ‘I’m not (medicated for depression). Everyone always begged me to, but I don’t want to do it. I just like smoking weed and whatever other drug comes my way. Most people usually have to set out to find drugs. I don’t like to pay for it. I just like to get it for free.’
‘I suffer from depression and some days I wake up and I’m like: “F**k I wish I didn’t wake up”. That was part of why I moved to California, trying to get away from the place that was doing that to me, and the people I was around. I realized it was just myself — it’s a chemical imbalance in my brain’.
The star, who had his forehead inked with the words ‘Get Cake Die Young’, was described by Pitchfork as: ‘He sings from his throat in half-rapped ruminations about guzzling drugs, suicide, and ex-girlfriends, all facets of his real life.’
Rest in peace Lil Peep. Forever be remembered by your fans.
