Witnesses near the school in Rancho Tehama, Northern California  said they heard between 90 to 100 gunshots amid the chaos which left 10 injured.

A witness,  Could Ferreira,  was dropping off his daughter at the small school when he heard gunshots and mistaking it for firecrackers.  He said he saw the school  secretary run out and shout at children to get inside because someone was shooting.

Mr Ferreira told reporters that he ran into a classroom with 14 other pupils as they hid as bullets cane in through the window and hit a boy in the chest and foot.

Local hospital officials said three people were transported by ground ambulances and one person,  a six-year-old boy ,  was airlifted in a helicopter.

Before the suspect was located, police advised local residents to stay in their homes.

In response to Rancho Tehama shooting,  the  US Vice President,  Mike Pence, wrote on twitter:

“Saddened to hear of the shooting in N. California, the loss of life & injuries, including innocent children. We commend the effort of courageous law enforcement. We’ll continue to monitor the situation & provide federal support, as we pray for comfort & healing for all impacted.”

This is all so disturbing.  We are yet to get over the Texas shooting which left 26 people dead and now having to deal with this.
